The stone pine is a very slow growing tree that can reach 1000 years in age. It can achieve a diameter of up to two metres and a height of up to 20 metres.
It is a particularity and specifically found in the Defereggen valley. The Oberhaus stone pine forest in St. Jakob i. Defereggental is one of the largest contiguous stone pine forests in the Eastern Alps and is a Tyrolean natural forest reserve.
Special schnapps and liqueurs are produced from its cones. Wood carvers in the region use the soft stone pine forest almost exclusively for their works of art. Visitors can discover this and much more relating to the tree that is part of the pine tree family at the interactive exhibition.
The exhibition in St. Jakob is fully dedicated to the stone pine – interactive modules provide interesting facts about the ecology of the stone pine forest. A simple push of a button lets you see short films or hear sounds and you will be accompanied by a pleasant stone pine fragrance as you walk through the exhibition.
