Nationalpark Hohe Tauern

East Tyrol eagle trail

Go to where eagles fly

Long-distance hiking in the Hohe Tauern National Park

Breath-taking alpine landscapes, stunning vistas, challenging hiking at altitude between the Grossvenediger and Grossglockner peaks. Long distance hikers will get to see for their own eyes what truly makes the Hohe Tauern National Park one of a kind when hiking along the eagle trail in East Tyrol: gentle Alpine pastures, craggy peaks, vast glaciers and untamed wilderness with challenging habitats for rare animal and plant species.

The Hohe Tauern is a paradise for mountaineers with the largest glacier in the Eastern Alps and Austria's highest mountains. In East Tyrol, there are more than 260 3000-metre high peaks with the Grossglockner towering over all of its neighbours with its 3,798 metres.

  • The route of the trail is reminiscent of an eagle's outstretched wings. With a bit of luck, hikers will also see golden eagles, bearded vultures, ibex, chamois and marmots. Mountaineering experience, fitness and surefootedness are essential for the nine stages over approx. 100 km. If you've still not had enough, then you can also climb one of the many promising summits along the way.

9 stages of approx. 5 hours and approx. 10 kilometres each
