Trail description:
From the first of the seven peace pyramids, the trail goes up along Krimmler Wasserfälle (Krimmler falls) and along the meadow trail into the valley. The second pyramid is located in front of the Krimmler Tauernhaus, and from here you continue into the valley for approximately 30 minutes. Around the Außerunlaß Alm meadow, the trail branches off towards the Windbachtal (Windbach valley), a side valley of the Krimmler Achental (Krimmler Achen valley). The trail then becomes steeper as you walk uphill through a beautiful stone pine forest. At the Windbachalm meadow, you will finally get a good view of the glaciated U-shaped valley. You then continue hiking to the end of the Windbachtal and then further up to Krimmler Tauern. Here, you will reach Italian territory. On the south side, it goes downhill rapidly. During your descent, you have the chance to stop for refreshments at Untertauernalpe. Once you have reached the valley floor, you will go past several meadows and then reach the village of Kasern.
Special feature:
In 1947, Krimmler Tauern was a key passage for the escape of 5,000 Jewish men, women and children from Eastern Europe fleeing persecution and a threat to their lives. Their destination was a new home – Palestine. To commemorate the events of the time and those who helped the refugees, the National Park APC Peace trail was installed in the year 2013 with a total of seven commemorative plaques along the historic escape route from Krimml to Kasern (South Tyrol). May the texts along this route accompany all people who walk this trail in their thoughts and encourage them to look closely, to act and to help whenever injustice crosses their paths.
