The Tauernfenster Geotrail will give you a glimpse through the window of the Hohe Tauern area and stands out due to its rich diveristy: the trail starts at the valley station of the Schareck-Umlaufseilbahn circulating cable car, close to the summit of Mt. Schareck at 2,590 m above sea level. From there, it will take you on an extensive loop to visit some of the geologically most interesting sites of the Hohe Tauern area. Thanks to its altitude and its location on the main Alpine ridge, it will award you with a unique panoramic view comprised of hundreds of mountains with a height of over 3,000 m. Moreover, you will be able to see an impressive karst landscape with sinkholes, caves and bizarre-looking weather-beaten shapes and forms.

Thanks to its route, the Geotrail is unique in the Hohe Tauern area: created high above the valleys, directly on the main Alpine ridge at a height of approx. 2,500 m above sea level, this grandiose circular trail awaits you without too many steep ascents and descents. What is more, the start of the trail can be reached easily and effortlessly via cable car.
Insights – as diverse as no other, this trail shows you what the rock environment of the Hohe Tauern areas has to offer. One of its highlights is the almost exotic karst landscape with sinkholes, caves and bizarre-looking weather-beaten shapes and forms.
Views – hikers will be able to view a magnificent ocean of summits through their own eyes. With good visibility, you will be able to see the majestic Mt. Großglockner, more than 100 mountains higher than 3,000 m in the national park and even famous mountains such as Mt. Watzmann, Mt. Dachstein, Mt. Triglav and the Drei Zinnen.
