Nationalpark Hohe Tauern

The kings of the Alps:
ibex observation

Ibex are majestic animals. We can only marvel at their size, their sure-footedness, their spectacular jumps through rock faces and their fights on exposed rocks. Being able to watch ibex up close is surely one of the most unforgettable moments in the Hohe Tauern National Park.

  • Before the tour begins, you will be handed high-quality observation devices, such as binoculars and spotting scopes etc. And then you will immerse yourself in the impressive world of the high mountains in the heart of the national park, where we will most probably see some local inhabitants, such as marmots and Alpine choughs.

Watching the mighty ibex with their horns with a length of up to one metre in their natural habitat is a truly magical moment of an unforgettable day at the national park. Make sure to bring your camera. There will be numerous moments with incomparable motives worth captivating.

The ibex were reintroduced to the area in 1960. Watching them up close is one of the most unforgettable experiences the Hohe Tauerne National Park has to offer. There is no other place where the “king of the Alps” can be observed in a way the area of the Kaiser-Franz-Josefs-Höhe allows it to. Here, approx. 200 animals have found their new home in the national park. During this morning hike, the chances are also high that we even spot a herd of ibex.
