Herb Trail

An old saying has it that ‘whatever the ailment, there’s always a herb to treat it’. And anyone taking part in the regional herbs guided tour at Heiligenblut’s ‘Kräuterwand’ area has the opportunity to find out which ones precisely. The Kräuterwand is a steep and very arid slope with a south-eastern orientation located above the Möll gorge. Many of the plants that normally thrive only on rocky grassland and in crevices do very well at this site.

  • Brief description of the tour:

From the Ibex House the trail follows the old Glocknerstrasse up to the Himmelschleife. It then continues across the Haritzersteig to the Kräuterwand and, from there, across the Sattelalpe to the Briccius Chapel, which takes 1.5 hours to reach. The trail leads through a well maintained and unspoilt cultural landscape comprised of steep mountain meadows resplendent with flowers. In early summer, the grazing pastures and larch meadows with their abundance of flowers and blossoms are a delightful sight to behold. The fabled Briccius Chapel is said to be situated in a site imbued with natural energy. According to popular belief, the local spring has a curative effect for eye ailments. Also along the way is the Briccius cheese dairy at the Sattelalm (1,606 m), a perfect spot for a break.

    Special features:

The Kräuterwand (approx. 1,600 m) is a steep escarpment accessed via a Steig or steep path. Rocky ridges exposed to the sunshine alternate with more shaded and well irrigated spots, creating a mosaic of micro-habitats. The diversity of rocks and boulders, the exposure to the sun, and the open forest structure provide the perfect environment for a vast array of plant species (distinctive flora: pinnate violet).

    Important information:

We recommend sturdy footwear, warm and weather-proof clothing, sunscreen and a backpack with drinks and snacks. Option of stopping off at the Briccius cheese diary at Sattelalm along the way.
