A Water-Rich Valley of Alpine Meadows with a Historic Mining Area and Vulture Sleep Cliffs – The Hollersbachtal invites you to discover the great and small wonders of the Hohe Tauern National Park.
Route Description:
Following the course of the rushing Hollersbach stream, the educational trail leads inward through a beautiful gray alder grove. The moist climate of the floodplain forest promotes the growth of mosses, ferns, and the pestilence root (Petasites), which is easily recognizable by its broad leaves. With a bit of luck, you might spot water wagtails along the stream, the only diving songbird species. In the adjacent spruce forest, winter goldcrests and crested tits find their ideal habitat. On the rugged, damp rocks, bright yellow lichen thrive. Information boards provide numerous details about the biological and ecological connections in and around the stream. Old stone walls line the path before reaching the Wirtsalm, bearing witness to the historical agricultural use of the land. The valley opens up into a vast alpine meadow landscape near the Senningerbräualm (1,187 meters).
