Nationalpark Hohe Tauern

Umbalfälle in Prägraten

Thundering water

Unlike almost any other valley in the Hohe Tauern, the Umbaltal (Umbal valley) demonstrates the landscape moulding effect and nature of a glacial stream in an impressive manner as seen on the water themed trail with the magnificent cascades of the Isel.

The smoothly polished green stone of the river bed with the washed out hollow shapes (gullies) is an indicator of the power of flowing water masses. A water trail with impressive viewing platforms lets you feel the spray of the water.

  • Trail description:
A gravel track takes you to Pebellalm and Islitzeralm through a forest of spruce and larch trees. The path to these pastures can also be enjoyed from a horse-drawn carriage. Here, you can see the Kleinbachfall and Großbachfall waterfalls, the first of many beautiful waterfalls on this trail. Further upstream the water trail takes you past the impressive Isel cataracts, the Umbalfälle.
