Schödertal in Hüttschlag

Autochthonous Hohe Tauern valley

The Schödertal (Schöder valley) is an autochthonous valley of the Hohe Tauern. The Schödersee (Schöder lake) is a periodic lake – to be more precise, it is the only periodic lake in the Hohe Tauern National Park – which only fills up during the spring thaw and after particularly heavy downpours. During the summer periods of good weather, the lake often dries up completely due to its underground outflow leaving behind only a few small, narrow streams that disappear between the stones into the ground.

From the Talwirt car park to Schödersee, an estimated 25 display boards guide you along the interesting the nature trail. The boards tell about the history, minerals, plants and animals in the Schödertal.

  • Trail description:

This walk starts at the car park at the Talwirt inn. The path first goes past the farmhouse Bauernhof Stockham, the Alte Seegut, a deer park and then continues through the meadows and pastures around the head of the valley to "Hüttschlag See" (Hüttschlag lake). Close to the bridge that crosses the river here, you will find a naturally occurring Kneipp pool with public barbecue area. Only a few metres beyond the Kneipp pool, a second path branches off for Ötzlsee (Ötzl lake).

The path continues up hill and down dale (caution: the path is slippery and wet in places: sturdy footwear is essential.) always next to the stream into the idyllic Schödertal. Just before you reach Schödersee (Schöder lake), you will see an old, small hunting lodge on the left. Then you will reach Schödersee (Schöder lake).
