The Schöder Valley is an unspoiled Tauern valley. The Schödersee is a periodic lake – in fact, the only periodic lake in the Hohe Tauern National Park – that fills only during snowmelt and after particularly heavy rainfall. During fair weather periods in summer, it often dries out completely due to its underground drainage system, leaving behind just a few small, narrow streams that eventually disappear into the stones on the ground.
From the parking area at the Talwirt, the fascinating "Elemental Nature Trail" leads to the Schödersee, with around 25 information boards. These describe the history, minerals, plants, and animals of the Schöder Valley.
Directions:
This hike begins at the parking lot near the Talwirt Inn. The trail first passes by the Stockham farm, the old Seegut estate, and a red deer enclosure, then continues through the meadows and wetlands at the end of the valley to "Hüttschlag/See." Near the bridge over the stream, on the right side, you'll find a natural Kneipp therapy facility and a public barbecue area. Just a few meters past the Kneipp area, a side trail to the Ötzlsee branches off to the left.
The path then continues over rocks and roots (Caution: the trail is often slippery and wet, so sturdy footwear is absolutely essential), always following the stream into the idyllic Schöder Valley. Shortly before reaching the Schödersee, you'll find a small, old hunting hut on the left. Finally, you'll arrive at the Schödersee.
