Pasterze
Glacier Trail

The Pasterze glacier trail is an exciting high mountain hike which will take you to the Pasterze, the largest glacier of the Eastern Alps. You will learn about the development of that glacier in the past centuries, see changes in landscape due to the retreat of the glacier and get to know the plants growing on the glacier foreland.

  • This tour starts at the Kaiser-Franz-Josefs-Höhe Visitor Centre and will take you down a steep Alpine trail alongside the mountain railway towards Lake Sandersee. A suspension bridge will take you to the roaring Möllschlucht gorge. Once we’ve hiked around the sediment-filled Lake Sandersee over rock steps and glacier moraines, we will come back to the trail that will lead us back to the valley station of the mountain railway. From there, we can take a side trip to the secured area of the Pasterze glacier. Then we make our steep way back up to the Franz-Josefs-Höhe, which can also be shortened by approx. 30 minutes if you take the cable car.

    Highlights:

On the Pasterze glacier trail, we can observe the retreat of the Ice Age. We ascend from a colourful flower landscape and retrace the increasingly sparse life step by step until we reach naked rock and slip rocks. This is land only released by the glacier in recent years. Guided by a national park ranger, we will experience and learn about the whims of nature on the largest glacier of the Eastern Alps.
