Nationalpark Hohe Tauern

Summer pleasure tour
Meet the Big Five

Wildlife observation safari

Every moment is an unforgettable experience: following the traces of the Big Five in their natural habitat of the Hohe Tauern National Park is an absolute ranger tour highlight in East Tyrol.

  • Brief tour description:

This tour starts at the Glocknerwinkel parking lot (opposite of the Lucknerhaus in Kals am Großglockner). From there, we will hike along the themed national park trail “Berge-Denken – “Thinking Mountains” and then along a road to the Lucknerhütte. Depending on the observations, time and stamina we can also hike to the Lucknerhütte or stay at the bottom of the Ködnitztal (Ködnitz valley) and hike back along the opposite side of the Ködnitzbach stream.

Equipped with spotting scopes and binoculars, we will go and discover the habitat of ibex, chamois, marmots, golden eagles and bearded vultures. On this wildlife observation safari, the national park ranger will quickly spot and show you small and large inhabitants of the national park, and we will be able to watch them from up close. By means of illustrative material and stories, the rangers will tell you fascinating details about the behaviour and survival strategies of these Alpine animals. They will also talk about the eradication of the ibex and their reintroduction in the mid-1960s to the Ködnitztal of Kals. We will conclude this pleasant hike with a visit to the newly erected Grossglocknerpanorama building at the Glocknerwinkel parking lot, where we will anjoy the new exhibition on the “Big Five” and the panoramic terrace with its marvellous view of the Grossglockner.

    Important information:

We recommend hiking boots, weather-resistant clothing, snacks and drinks optional; you can buy food and drinks at Lucknerhaus and Lucknerhütte; if you go on a day-tour after the wildlife observation safari, you can also hike to the Stüdlhütte hut, Glorerhütte or the Salmhütte.
