Cross-Border Network for the Conservation of the Golden Eagle: Generating Knowledge, Preserving Habitats, Sharing Experience

The golden eagle is a characteristic species of the Alps and a symbol of the pristine wilderness and ecological stability of this unique mountain landscape. As a so-called flagship species, the golden eagle represents the protection of numerous other species and their vulnerable habitats.
The aim of the project is to ensure the long-term conservation of the golden eagle in the Alpine region, generate sound scientific knowledge, preserve habitats, and promote continuous exchange of experience.
The project is structured into three closely interconnected work packages:

WP1: Project Coordination, Communication and Networking

Overall coordination will ensure efficient project implementation and will be responsible for the administrative management of the project. Regular internal exchange processes will strengthen cooperation between the partner organisations. Targeted communication and media activities will increase the visibility of the project. The establishment and maintenance of a cross-border network of partners and stakeholders will foster long-term cooperation and bring together expertise across national borders.

WP2: Data Management, Monitoring and Analysis

The objective is to establish harmonised, cross-border golden eagle monitoring throughout the entire project area, providing a scientific basis for conservation decisions and the assessment of disturbance risks. In addition, GIS-based habitat and trend analyses will provide important insights into habitats, population trends and potential threats. Migratory bird monitoring will complement the overall ecological picture and support decision-making in conservation management.

WP3: Conservation Strategies, Awareness-Raising and Public Outreach

Based on the data collected, effective conservation strategies will be developed and implemented jointly. A target-group-oriented educational programme will raise awareness among schools, visitors and other interested groups of the importance of the golden eagle and its habitat. By involving target groups throughout the project region, lasting connections will be established that contribute to long-term data collection and awareness-raising. Knowledge transfer between research institutions, protected areas and the general public will strengthen the long-term integration of golden eagle conservation into regional conservation efforts.
