Breathtaking beauty with a prestigious distinction
As early as 1967, the Krimml Waterfalls were awarded the European Diploma for Protected Areas – commonly known as the European Diploma – an honor granted by the Council of Europe to natural and semi-natural areas of outstanding international importance.
This special distinction highlights not only the breathtaking beauty of the Krimml Waterfalls, but also their important role in nature conservation.

Impressive, mystical, and unique
The Krimml Waterfalls in the Salzburger Pinzgau region, with a total drop of 380 meters across three cascades, offer an overwhelming experience. As the fifth-highest waterfalls in the world, they provide a stunning natural spectacle and countless photographic opportunities.
A dedicated hiking trail takes visitors up close to this spectacle of water and light, framed by the magnificent backdrop of the Hohe Tauern National Park.
Highlights:
- Roaring waters in various forms: Breathtaking gorge landscapes, flora featuring 327 different moss species, diverse birdlife, and wetland vegetation.
- Visitors who climb the entire waterfall trail can continue their hike into the Krimmler Achental, a high alpine valley with lush alpine meadows and meandering rivers.
Best time to visit:
Capture fascinating light and water effects throughout the day (especially from morning to early afternoon in sunlight).
The waterfalls carry the most water in late June and July.
Dining options:
Several restaurants are located at the base of the waterfalls, with additional options in the Krimmler Achental.
